2. Each task that wants to use this device must open the device with a call to the OpenDevice function. The purpose of the OpenDevice function is similar to the OpenLibrary function, the OpenResource function, and other "open" functions in the Amiga Exec system. They allow a task in the system (the task that has the OpenDevice statement) to gain access to the device. Since this is a multitasking sys tem, many tasks can use the same device. Each issues an OpenDevice call when it becomes the active task.

Rather, it is the message that has worked its way to the top of the queue (now the first message in the list). Other messages in that queue are moved up in the message list. 4. GetMsg tells the task that a message is now available. A pointer to the Message structure for that message is returned by GetMsg. 5. The task can now access, use, and possibly change the data in the message. Task statements to accomplish this are placed between the GetMsg and ReplyMsg (or GetMsg and PutMsg) statements. These task statements—represented by the long lines with arrows inside the MyTask rectangle—make use of the data information in the message.

Second, structure names begin with a capital letter and are otherwise lowercased, except when they are compound words. In this case, there is a capitalization variation in the middle of the name. Examples of this are the MsgPort structure, the List structure, and the BitMap structure. Structures that are referenced in a function call by pointer vari ables have pointer variable names that usually match the structure name. Examples of this are the msgPort pointer variable, which points to the MsgPort structure, and the interrupt pointer variable, which points to the Interrupt structure.
